Understanding PM Roles Across Different Company Scales
In the U.S., product managers (PMs) are evenly distributed across companies of different sizes. According to Aakash’s observations, his audience is split into roughly equal proportions: 20% each work in firms with over 10,000 employees, 5,000–10,000 employees, 1,000–5,000 employees, 100–1,000 employees, and fewer than 100 employees.
This diverse spread contrasts with Europe, where PMs often emerge from digital transformations in legacy sectors or scale-ups like Bolt and Revolut.
Company size heavily influences how product work is structured. Smaller companies require minimal bureaucracy, while larger organizations (10k+ employees) depend on roles like product operations and well-defined frameworks to manage scale. The U.S. dominates in growth-stage companies and unicorns, which contributes to its robust PM ecosystem.
