Agile Alliance + PMI
Is Agile's end finally sealed or is it an attempt to make it more relevant?
Is Agile's end finally sealed or is it an attempt to make it more relevant?
"On December 31, 2024, Agile Alliance entered into a strategic partnership with the Project Management Institute (PMI), the global leader in project management."

"Agile Alliance® joins PMI"

One thing we learned in both PMI and Agile over and over again is that
- we can't predict the future!
So, let’s take a breath—whatever we’re reading about this “merger” today is just - estimations, predictions, or forecasts - which just like the weather can drastically change overnight.
Can I say “project” now?
PMI is a certification giant, Agile Alliance is a non-profit organization, organizing the world’s largest Agile conference.
It feels like a giant next to a small fairy.
Yet, I can't help but see the positive side of putting an end to the "community's apparent aversion to project management" as Jim Highsmith has put it.
I remember when I first learned about Agile, I was taught to embrace the aversion:
Rule #1 "Thou must hate on project management."
And I remember the efforts to mask and rename everything that could remind us about it:
a project became an initiative, a project manager -> a scrum master, etc.
If this "merger" allows us to stop the name games and call things what they are, that’s already a win.
There will always be companies that lean into a more agile, flexible way of working. And there will be those who want a rigid approach and a fixed framework. Both can benefit from hybrid approaches.
Today, with more experience in the field, I am embracing the fact that hybrid is not a pollution of Agile. It's an adaptive way to handle projects and create products based on the company's unique context and needs.
We can all profit from more collaboration and flexibility in the processes and org governance.
So I, for one, am optimistic about what’s to come.
Collaboration2.0 is the way to go!
What do you think about the giant and the fairy joining forces? Or is this just the start of a new debate? 👀
